About Us

Established 40 years ago, Scorpio Books is a Christchurch institution. It is the best place to go to browse and buy books in Christchurch, or if you get stuck, we encourage you to come ask our knowledgeable and somewhat eclectic staff for a recommendation. With old-fashioned leather chairs strategically placed around both our shops, it is easy to spend hours here.

Scorpio Books' collection ranges from our favourites in quality fiction and crime, the latest as well as classic cookbooks, graphic novels, books on sociology, business management, economics, classic history, military history, foreign languages, architecture and art, to comprehensive selections of diverse topics such as woodworking, mathematics and self-sufficiency. Our store also has the largest selection of new Science Fiction & Fantasy in New Zealand and our childrens section has a mass of wonderful stories for all ages. With a computer database containing over a million titles, what we do not have we can get for you, provided its still in print.

Before the earthquakes, we were located at 79 Hereford Street, some of the ruins of which can still be seen.

In March 2011, we moved all we could to a new location on Riccarton Road. The atmosphere was quite different out there near Westfield shopping mall but we received a huge amount of support from the local businesses and people, both familiar and new.

Later in 2011, we were approached to open a second satellite shop in the Re:start container mall on Cashel Street to promote business in the CBD. This container store moved around Cashel Mall (literally) until its final location by The Bridge of Remembrance.

In February 2016, we moved our city branch back to the same block of Hereford Street, now across the road at 120 Hereford Street in the BNZ Centre. The new city shop was refreshingly capacious compared to the overflowing container store.

In March 2017, our two shops were combined into the new Hereford Street location. Most easily accessed from Cashel Mall across from Ballantynes, our new store is just a short walk from the new Bus Interchange, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu.

Come in and browse our large selection of titles and genres. Talk to one of our staff who can help find a book for you, and remember: If we don't have it, and it is still in print, we can get it. This takes 7-10 days from Australia or the US and about 2 weeks from the UK, which is much faster than most.

More background info...

Scorpio Books’ David Cameron - 50 years a bookseller and planning many more.
David Cameron, Scorpio’s owner, has been in books since leaving school to work at UBS Dunedin in 1965. Ten years later he bought the Christchurch business, then Pisces Books.
In 1979 there was a change of astrological name to become Scorpio.

Initially, the stock was counter-culture alternative and quite different. Cookbooks were only for vegans and vegetarians, but over the past 25 years much has changed, accelerating 20 years ago when Scorpio moved to a 400 square metre site in the city center.
