Drawing inspiration from his own journey to the Subantarctic Islands, south of New Zealand, Henry Turner reimagines the steep cliffs, abundant vegetation and wildlife of this remote environment into a mythological, at times psychedelic, setting. The paintings in Deep Gold depict scenes from the accompanying narrative of sailors stranded on an otherworldly island – wonderous and bountiful but terrible and volatile. We follow their journey though the paintings and witness the unwinding mystery of the place, controlled and watched over by an almighty being.
Turner mixes the Subantarctics with classical and romantic iconography, contrasting enlightened civilisation with the untameable wild. This conflict echoes throughout the exhibition as it does in the historic ecological influence of humanity on the remote islands.
We experience the splendor of these landscapes through the vibrancy of colour in Turner’s saturated pallet of gouache paints. He captures the emotion of each scene, be it the dazzling displays of turbulent panic at sea or the relief of the caverns and land. His use of layered sharp, striking, opaque brushstrokes adds to the vivid nature of these depictions.
Painting, frame and story are inseparable, each building upon the other. The specially designed frames with rounded corners and overlaid paintings add to the extravagance of the exhibition. Turner invites his audience to indulge in these works and explore the mysteries within.
Henry Turner draws content from his experiences of the natural world. With a strong knowledge of the classics and art history, Turner fills his works with an evocative iconography of references and figures. Painting, framing and storytelling are closely linked to create complete objects
Henry Turner is passionate about the environment and painting what he experiences. He is an acute observer. He has been creating art since he was able to hold a pen or brush.
Henry has sold works through various South Island exhibitions. He has been selected for NZPPA in 2019, won the Premier Prize at Darfield Art Week and Break Through Artist at the WSA National Youth Art Award, Peoples' Choice Award, as well as both 2D and Printing Awards in the past. He was thrilled to host a solo exhibitions at the Selwyn Gallery when he was only 16, Art on The Quay and at Next Gallery. Currently he has a solo show and an accompanying novella showing at City Art Depot. He was the Emerging Artist for “Art in a Garden” at Hawarden.
Thanks to a gift From Heritage Expeditions he has traveled to the Sub Antarctic Islands on a Birding Tour where he completed many drawings and pursued his love of photography on the 18 day voyage. Highlights were many, but the albatross courtship on Campbell Island and the mass of King and Royal Penguins and Elephant Seals that were completely unafraid on Macquarie Island were simply incredible. One of the best aspects of the trip was learning how little it takes to make a huge difference to the conservation on these islands. In 2018 he was asked on another incredible voyage to the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu with Tim Flannery. Being part of the small expedition that met with Chief Essau and the mountain tribe of Malaita was an incredible privilege
Henry collects books and bones and is an avid reader. He has drawn imaginary worlds, circus imagery, architecture and lifelike birds. He loves gardens and painting what he experiences here. He was feted by Sir Richard Taylor of Weta and allowed to draw from the behind the scenes collections of the Canterbury Museum. He has done many works recently referencing the Okaines Bay Museum.
